"A Nexus of Bliss"

Direction Will Forrester
USA, 2008

With this project, the filmmaker attempted to combine the age old art of music with one of the most modern art forms, that of digital animation. The music for the piece was written by the filmmaker and played on the actual instruments, which included a piano, cello, and vocals. Secondly, the film imagery was hand drawn and then edited using a variety of software. The themes in this project include Buddhist concepts. Namely, the interconnectedness of all beings (the nexus), and the idea that enlightenment can be fulfilled in this lifetime when people attempt to awaken to the depths of reality. Reality in and of itself, has a surprisingly surreal quality if a person allows herself to be carried in that direction. Finally, there is a plethora of intended symbolism throughout the film.

Screenwriting, Photography, Editing, Sound editing: Will Forrester

Running time: 4 minutes
Production Format: personal computer

"City South"

Direction Malte Jehmlich, Nicolai Skopalik, Nils Voges
Germany, 2007

A transfer to Sudstadt- City South, the roughest, meanest quarter of the city, becomes a living nightmare for a job-proud Postman. A film about the power and possibility of failure. synopsis: A transfer to Sudstadt - City South - , the roughest, meanest quarter of the city, becomes a living nightmare for a job-proud Postman. Bust-up postboxes, mixed-up house numbers, and mysterious inhabitants make it more and more difficult for him to get through the working day. A film about the power and possibility of failure. Set in a place somewhere between faded-glory and ghetto, the story of overworked man unfolds, whose hard times working on skid row in the end at least afford him some surprising friendships. Along the way we get a glimpse, not without humour and irony, of a world where spam doesn’t only overflow virtual mailboxes, where job descriptions are stretched further and further, and where growing numbers of people live a deprived lower class lifestyle.

Biography: A table, cardboard boxes, various craft materials, three design students and a lot of enthusiasm – these were the ingredients for founding sputnic. In 2004 Malte Jehmlich, Nicolai Skopalik and Nils Voges were assembling „Jansentown“ on the kitchen table of their shared flat. Originally to be used as scenery for an experimental DVD menu, this model continued to outgrow the table until it covered a 2 by 2 metre area, and turned the kitchen in an animation studio. Set construction, filming and animation went on for months. The result, with a total budget of 90 Euros, was an extremely unusual Menu for a music video DVD for the band Jansen that followed the principle of non-linear storytelling. The project was covered by magazines digital production, page and novum, the collective sputnic was born. Likewise, their following projects are characterized by the love of experimentation and attention to detail. With their box of analogue and digital tricks they bring their works to life. They like to draw on the aesthetics of so-called „outdated“ techniques, and combine them with the newest digital means to create unconventional visual worlds with a very special warming, and slightly eccentric, charm. Together they have produced many musical, cultural and stage projects, also working in the field of classical graphic design, such as illustration, corporate design and motion graphics. Succeeding several music video productions, Sudstadt is their first animated short movie.

"Rhythms of Lahij"

Direction Fariz Ahmedov
Azerbaijan, 2008

The village Lahij is a historical-architectural monument which is protected by the state. It’s one of ancient villages of Azerbaijan. When you come to this village for the first time, you get a feeling is if you returned for several centuries back - to the Middle Ages epoch. The dried up river bed is covered by stones which rough stream brings here in a high water. Lahij also was under construction of these stones throughout centuries. A roadway, houses, fences – all is made of stone. But the main pride of Lahij, certainly, is its copper craft. For a long time Lahij was the centre of coppersmiths most known in caucasus. The copper products made in Lahij are stored in museums of Europe: in Louver, Bern museum. The local population follows craft traditions as before which they inherited from grandfathers.

"Waterway"

Direction Jung-Chul Hur
South Korea - Thailand, 2005

The footage in this film comes from a boat trip in Bangkok, Thailand. The scene begins showing canal views from a distance and gradually brings us closer to the waterway scene. Sounds were recorded simultaneously with the images and then slightly modified. Motor sounds of canal boat, people’s voices and other surrounding sounds blend together and frequently synchronizing with the kaleidoscopic water-splashing image. Rivers and canals have always been important forms of connecting place to place and people to people. The “Waterway” is an audio-visual journey, and it is interesting to observe how this eye-catching daily life scene becomes both hypnotic and surreal.
